I now have three business trips for April! Woo hoo... (sarcasm
)
The first one starts tomorrow FCA-SEATAC-SMF. SEATAC-SMF is a 737-
900, otherwise it would take a while...
T
hen April 15th and then April 25th. Both FCA-SEATAC-POR. Unfortunately
it’s too early in the season for our seasonal direct to Portland.
Here is snippit of their unique liverys on the Q400. Honestly I don’t mind the plane
s, they are a bit loud but they get the job done without hassle and are quick to load and unload. Even with a max cruising
speed of around 300-350 knots the travel times on short hops are not that different than a jet.

For my trip to Hawaii the first leg from Spokane to Portland was on an Embraer commuter jet. Soooo much better than the Q400 that Alaska/Horizon usually stuffs us in.

Yeah, they are adding 175's to the fleet but they seem to
run when they are moving more people. I think t
he Q400 is still more efficient and cheaper to fly than the 175 especially if not a full load
. The problem right now is we are in the shoulder season so not as much tourist traffic so they have the Q400's back out and doing service.

I considered it a just reward for taking a 5:30am flight. It was the first time that the seats in the short haul part of that trip were more comfortable than those in the 737 doing the long haul.

I’ve flown on those Air Berlin Dash 8s. One flight we had to wait to get off because the baggage handlers got stuck in the snow:
I was surprised that they had six-bladed propellers, in the states I had flown on a bunch of them since they were the standard from Ithaca to Newark and LaGuardia, but those were all four-blade versions.

I love them and don’t mind the NVH at all. Excellent views from every window. Who wants to stare at the top of the wing, anyway?!

I always get as far forward seat as possible, in
front of the prop and easier to access the tiny lavatory.

The seats on the Alaska 175 seem to have about 1" more leg room than the Delta 175. F86Sablre has some explaining to do.

It’s just a gigantic prop turning at a frantic pace right next to your face...

T
he horizon planes look like they have the 6 rotor prop too.

I believe it’s mostly newer ones that have it, though presumably airlines can retrofit if they want.

I like the Dash 8, something psychologically reassuring about seeing those big, powerful propellers out the window.

The sports team ones are neat but my favorite
Q400
is the 1981 throwback Horizon Air

Also protip, if you have to do a lot of Q400 legs, make sure you sign up for mileage plan - you’ll be well on your way to
MVP status
by the end of the month. It’s only 20 legs, so those short hops add
up quick.

Yeah I’m already a mileage plan member and I think I’m up to two free tickets, I just don’t want to fly if I’m taking time off because I’m always flying for work.

There is also lots of inertia there and if one broke off...

Well I guess since I moved they upped it to 30, but if you get MVP you get to check two bags free, and you get preferred seats/first class
upgrades on Alaska. If you get 60 legs, you get a free drink on every flight and you always get priority security line even if you are on a cheapy
ticket
. I used to go visit friends in the Bay Area for the weekend (on a $100/return ticket) and always get upgraded to first when I had MVP gold.
Ha yeah business travel sucks, but Alaska is really good for redeeming international flights - you can go to Asia and Europe for not a lot of miles.

Let’s hope it’s not too windy.

I watched this the other day, terrifying to say the least. I can’t believe they were actually landing.

You could probably say the same thing about those newfangled fan blades.

Well, nobody died, so I guess those pilots know what they’re up to. Many years ago, I was flying to Bowling Green, KY for a job interview and had to change planes in Chicago. We were on an Embraer 145, and when we pushed back from the gate the wind gusts were rocking the plane back and forth. After sitting on the tarmac for a few minutes, the captain said, “This is the captain. It’s too windy, and I’m not flying today.” I ended up renting a car and driving (paid for by the university I was interviewing with) , rather than wait for the bus that the airline was arranging.
